Call for Applications: Join the African Science Literacy Network Team

The African Science Literacy Network is now accepting applications for volunteers to join its management team in 2022.


We’re a small group of scientists and journalists, driven by a vision to promote science in Africa. To do so, we train scientists and journalists in science communication, and equip them with the skills they need to effectively communicate science with policymakers and the public. We believe that this work helps to bridge the wide gap between science and society, raise the profile of African scientific research, and promote science literacy on our continent.


We’re looking for science communicators, journalists, and scientists who are based in Africa to take on the roles of communications manager, and work as volunteers, in our organization for 1 year effective from the appointment date. The positions are voluntary, with no monetary compensation at the moment, but training and learning opportunities in science communication and journalism are available. The selected candidates will work directly with the Director of Programmes and Training, and the Board of Trustees, to help facilitate our activities in Africa.

Communication manager


Eligibility: This role is open for a young journalist, science writer, or a communication professional who with interest in science communication. The candidate should be passionate about science and health issues, and a sound knowledge of science will be helpful. Skills needed include: research, report writing, graphics design, and social media management.


Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Director of Programmes and Training to develop communication strategy, work-plan and fundraising plans for the African Science Literacy Network.

  • Facilitate online and offline training, science cafes and events, organized by the African Science Literacy Network.

  • Share information science news via social media.

  • Sharing of science communication opportunities across our social media platform and mailing list.

  • Develop ideas and concepts on science engagement in Africa.

  • Design flyers, posters and infographics for social media engagement.

  • Develop news articles on science and research in Africa.

  • Develop contents, programs, activities and work-plan on a quarterly/yearly basis and track implementation.

  • Organize and manage tweet chats activities and track progress made.

2. Volunteers


Eligibility: This role is open for a young journalist, science writer, scientist, or professional, with an interest in science communication. The candidate should be passionate about STEM and volunteerism. Skills needed include: good writing and communication, strong interpersonal relationship, proven leadership abilities, and strong team collaboration.
