Baraka Bashir has been a journalist with Freedom Radio, Nigeria, since her National Service in 2008. She developed an interest in journalism after losing her father, who was a journalist during his lifetime. Baraka specialises on environmental and health issues but also reports on other sectors when the need arises. In 2012, she produced and presented a documentary on environmental problems in Kano State, Nigeria, which was widely viewed.

Baraka has attended many workshops and conferences. In 2011, she participated at the Current Affairs, Journalistic Research & Investigation organised by Deutsche Welle Akademie. In 2012, she was competitively selected by the Federation of Science journalist/ Kavli Foundation to attend and cover the Nobel laureate prize ceremony in Nano Science Astrophysics and Neuroscience in Oslo, Norway. She has also participated in the professional Fellowship exchange programme in USA, as a visiting Journalist from Nigeria to OPB, Portland, Oregon. In 2016, she was a participant in the Video Journalism training organised by the Voice of America (VOA) services in Abuja. Baraka is a member of the Nigerian Association of Science Journalist.
