Abdulsalam Mahmud

Journalist, PRNigeria and The Nation Newspaper

“Government must prioritize science journalism as a veritable tool for communicating amazing scientific breakthroughs”

Abdulsalam Mahmud is a Defence and Environment Correspondent with PRNigeria, an Abuja-based online news medium, and also an Education/Campus Reporter for The Nation newspaper in Niger State, since 2015. The award-winning young journalist has authored over 300 news stories, feature reports, opinion articles, special reports and investigative stories, among others, for The Nation, DailyTrust, Punch, Tribune, DailySun, Leadership, Blueprint and Newsline Newspapers. He was once an editorial writer, columnist, TV programme script-writer and researcher for Royalty Magazine, Hamdasa Media Limited and Nigeria Now Magazine. In Niger State where he is a Correspondent for The Nation, he has covered and published over 100 stories in the weekly CAMPUSLIFE pull-out of the newspaper, on professorial inaugural lectures, academic activities and other interesting campus events at Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMINNA), Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai (IBBUL), and Federal Polytechnic Bida, among other tertiary institutions in the State. Aside from contributing stories, reports and articles regularly for various national dailies, he has also written several news commentaries for radio broadcasts at Crystal FM, 91.3 FM Minna. At the 2019 Campus Journalism Awards (CJA) organized by Youths Digest in Abuja, he bagged the ‘Up-coming Writer of the Year’ award. Before graduating from Fati Lami Abubakar Institute of Legal and Administrative Studies (FLAILAS) Minna, in 2016, with Distinction in Mass Communication, he had received the ‘Most Talented Intern’ award during his internship with Newsline newspaper, in 2015.

 

In April this year, he joined 12 environmental journalists, researchers and wildlife/nature photographers selected by the African Arts for Media Earth Initiative (AAMEI) to participate in a 3-day Eco-Journalism Academy/Workshop at Lufasi Nature Park, in Lagos. Just recently, he participated in the ‘Science Communication and Journalism Workshop’ organized by Teaching and Research in Natural Sciences for Development (TreND) in Africa for 74 Nigerians scientists, researchers and journalists in Abuja. A Fellow of both AAMEI, ASLN and a Writing Fellow with African Liberty, he has attended a couple of media conferences and investigative workshops organized for journalists across the country.
