Isyaku Umar Yarube is a physician-scientist, a Professor of Physiology who works in the Neuroscience and Pathophysiology Unit of the Department of Human Physiology, College of Health Sciences, Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria.
His current research focus is cognitive impairment in diabetes and stroke. His research experience involves investigating insulin activity in the brain, nitric oxide signalling, oxidative stress and antioxidants, as well as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
Yarube obtained his medical degree in 1997 from the prestigious Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Moscow, Russia. He also has MSc and PhD degrees from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Nigeria; and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Nigeria. He has received additional training in 25 training workshops in different areas, including health research ethics (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative [CITI Program] and West African Bioethics Training Program), advanced research methods, biostatistics, and teaching techniques. Since graduation, Yarube worked as a medical officer before joining his current employer in 2003. He is a member of the Physiological Society of Nigeria (PSN), Neuroscience Society of Nigeria (NSN) (currently serving as the Public Relations Officer and Assistant Secretary General), Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), African Association of Physiological Sciences (AAPS), Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA), International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), The Physiological Society (UK) (currently the Society Representative for BUK), among others.
In his over 16 years of teaching and research experience at the graduate and postgraduate levels, he has supervised many Bachelor, Master and Doctorate degrees; has published 45 articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals, including Nigerian Journal of Physiological Sciences (PSN), Pathophysiology (Elsevier) and Physiology and Behaviour (Elsevier); and has 24 papers presented in about 20 national and international scientific conferences to his name. He has received a number of grants for Departmental Seminar Scheme from The Physiological Society (UK). He serves a number of national and international journals as reviewer; and the National Universities Commission (NUC) as resource person in accreditation of Physiology and Medicine programs in Nigerian universities.
Yarube has a rich administrative experience. He served as the Head of Department (2016 – 2018), Deputy Dean of Faculty (2014 – 2016), Sub-Dean (2011 – 2014) and Coordinator for many programs for many years. He also served in over 80 committees within and outside the university, including University Senate, Admissions Committee, Appointments and Promotions Committee, Research Committee, Quality Assurance, Medical Education and Curriculum Review Committee, Mentor-mentee Committee, Dress Code Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Local Organizing Committees for conferences, alumni associations and professional bodies, among others.
He has won a number of prices and awards including Best Plenary Speaker (Physiological Society of Nigeria, KASU 2016), nomination for Best Master Dissertation for 2008, Faculty of Medicine, ABU., Zaria (NUC Awards), Best Graduating Student (Science Secondary School, Kafin-Hausa, 1989).
