Dr Mohammed A. Ibrahim

Dr Mohammed Auwal Ibrahim obtained BSc (Hons) Biochemistry from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as the best student of the department for the year 2003 and an MSc (Biochemistry) from the same university in the year 2008. He proceeded to the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville Campus, Durban, South Africa where he obtained a PhD (Biochemistry) in 2014 which was followed by a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Biotherapeutics Research Group, University of Pretoria, South Africa (2016 – 2018). He was also recently awarded a research fellowship by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) tenable at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Tsukuba, Japan.

 

Dr Ibrahim joined the services of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as a Graduate Assistant in 2005 at the Department of Biochemistry where he rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2018. Within this period, he has taught more than 20 different undergraduate Biochemistry courses and 8 postgraduate courses. He has supervised more than 60 undergraduate projects and graduated 15 MSc students and 3 PhD students. On the research front, Dr Ibrahim has authored more than seventy (70) research articles which are published in internationally recognised impact scientific journals and are currently indexed by Scopus. So far, his publications produced total citations of 991 with an h-index of 18 and i-10 index of 36 according to his Google Scholar. He has also authored three book chapters published by international publishers. He has attended a number of workshops and conferences across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Austria, Georgia and South Korea where he also presented more than twenty (20) papers.

 

Dr Ibrahim has also won many awards and travel grants including a travel grant to attend the first West African Workshop on the Cell Biology of Protozoan Parasites by the American Society for Cell Biology and the Carnegie Corporation of New York at the University of Ghana in 2009 and an international travel grant by the Keith R Poster Endowment for Cell Biology to attend an ASCB/IFCB meeting at Philadelphia, USA in 2014. This is in addition to a competitive doctoral research grant from the Research Office of the University of KwaZulu Natal (Westville campus), Durban, South Africa in 2011 and 2012. In 2018, he became a recipient of the Young Scientist Program fellowship by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) and attended the 2018 congress of the IUBMB in Seoul, South Korea. With respect to science communication, Dr Ibrahim was involved in a number of programmes including a guest speaker to a one hour Freedom Radio Kano programme (Barka da Hantsi) to discuss limitations of Nigerian scientific research in general with particular emphasis to traditional medicine research, practice, application and modernisation. This is in addition to interviews by Weekly Trust and “Aminiya” newspapers as well as the Science Communication Hub Nigeria on various scientific issues. Lastly, Dr Ibrahim is a regular reviewer to more than ten (10) high impact scientific journals. He is also a member of Nigerian Young Academy and four other scientific associations including the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions as well as a Fellow of the African Science Literacy Network. He holds online certificates in teaching and learning courses from the University of Melbourne, Australia and the University of Hong Kong.
